Artist Biography
For Theresa Cates, one of her favorite activities is selecting a new set of brushes or restocking paint and material to fashion her next work. When the world is quiet and the house is still, she reaches a place of deep focus and comfort, and the beauty of her work takes form.

“I never know what is going to come through at those times, I don’t try to control it or plan what I am going to do. I just let it flow…”

It was not always this way for Theresa growing up on 2nd Street in North Little Rock, Arkansas. The youngest of three children, she remembers all too well the pains her family suffered. She credits her interest in art to her mother, who drew little stick people to cheer her up when times were difficult.

Theresa began to find her style of artistic expression at an early age. She recalls getting paint by the number sets and doing it her way, painting what she saw and felt in her heart and mind. People often marveled at drawings and sketches Theresa made just to help her relax and work through stress and discomfort. Jokingly, she talks about how bills and stray envelopes became the canvases for many a small masterpiece.

This wife and mother of five is a self-taught artist, specializing in acrylics. She is oft times driven to blend combinations of red, orange and brown. Theresa paints purely from a heightened state of spirituality arising from the union between heart, soul and mind. Time stands still for her as she allows the expressions of the universal soul to flow through her. She gives God the credit for her abilities.

Theresa’s artwork titled “Majestic Motions,” has been exhibited at OVAL Art Gallery in Little Rock, Arkansas, Argenta Art Gallery in the Historic Downtown District of North Little Rock and ABL Art Gallery in Covington, GA. Theresa was one of seven artists chosen to speak at a reception sponsored by the renowned art magazine “Artistic Impressions” in Chicago. In recalling the event, Theresa laughed and said, “Never in my life had I dreamed of people stopping me and asking for my autograph. Theresa was honored to have been part of the historical opening of the William “Bill” Jefferson Clinton Library, where several of her pieces were featured and sold.

“When people look at my art, I want them to see that no pain or obstacle is insurmountable. Life is a canvas, and in that respect we’re all artists. The end result can be whatever. Let God do his work; let your experiences be expressed in a creative way. Just pick up your brush and let it flow. It is there that you will find your comfort and your inspiration.”
